  I was at the Tocumwal Soaring Centre for one week in mid-January 1988. I had done 150 hours of gliding in New Zealand and did my first 50km cross-country flight at Tocumwal as part of my Australian holiday. I flew 50 km north to Jerildere, taking photos over the town (turning point), but forgot about the requirement to carry a barograph, (for the Silver C badge requirements I was hoping to complete). I used the economy accomodation of a room next to the gliding hangar without air-conditioning. Not only was it like a sauna, but I got badly bitten on my feet by mosquitoes. The day temperatures that week were in the mid 40s C. I enjoyed the flying though immensely and was surprised by the strong thermal conditions, even to high altitude (compared to NZ). I did the cross-country flight cautiously,maintaining at least 7000 ft altitude for most of the flight.
